Connecting models with measured results
In a September 15, 2026 feature, STMicroelectronics described plans for an R&D digital twin center at Castelletto, Italy. The proposed environment would combine simulation, artificial intelligence and experimental silicon data across semiconductor development.
ST says physical validation will remain necessary. It also separates the initiative from manufacturing execution, which stays within its existing manufacturing digital programs.

A phased development plan
The company outlines infrastructure work and proofs of concept through the end of 2027, followed by a further three to five years to complete and deploy the engineering approach. These are planned stages. The update does not present the center as a completed installation.

LANGOM perspective
For teams specifying engineering infrastructure, the practical question is how a proposed system will produce evidence that a design is ready. A useful project brief should identify the measurements that will be collected, the decisions they support and the criteria for accepting a model. Define who approves changes to those criteria before choosing hardware or software.
When comparing equipment proposals, ask for an end-to-end demonstration using a representative dataset. Follow one result from the instrument through storage and analysis to the engineering report. Check that units, calibration records, device identifiers and software versions remain traceable. Include a deliberately incomplete dataset to see how the workflow reports missing information rather than silently producing a result.
Capacity planning should then use the expected workload: dataset size, retention period, concurrent users and acceptable processing time. Record the assumptions behind compute, network and storage estimates so they can be tested during acceptance. This turns a broad digital engineering ambition into requirements that procurement and integration teams can evaluate together.
